There's this cool mod called Advanced HUD which lets you change pretty much everything in your HUD. Change hearts into a HP bar, full-width XP bar, reposition or remove things you don't want or make them fade out when not needed. There's really not many sprites included, so it should be fairly easy to make a patch.
