Why Photo Shop over Illustrator?

So I've been learning 3D modeling, and I absolutely love sphax textures. I came to the forums to start learning the process behind their creation and to try and make some patches to learn how to make sphax like textures. However it seems like you all use photo shop to make your images, I've been using illustrator for a while and naturally assumed as a vector based texture pack everything would of been made inside of illustrator. Is there any reason every one here uses photoshop over illustrator?

The "real" argument would be that Illustrator is really for zine/poster designing (i.e. printed stuff).

Whereas PhotoShop (nowadays, it never really used to be) is for general digital graphical consumption. Adobe have poured so much in to PS that it's killed off Fireworks (although Fireworks is arguably only for Web design), but a lot of people just learn PS and stick with it.

To be honest it's irrelevant. If you can use it, do what you want with it, and get a good standard of work out of it it doesn't matter what you use.

To prove the point, AranhaPreta - who does amazing work - uses Corel.

There are also a few people who use GIMP to great effect, too!
