I'm pretty sure you supposed to be able to see what the pattern you're selecting in the Loom is. What we see in the preview pane is just a mess and none of it correlates to the pattern being selected in any way.
Currently the only way to know is to highlight the result and read the list.

Probably sick of hearing this, but it's a game bug.
It was an issue a long time ago that Mojang fixed, and now they re-broke it.
Basically the game isn't scaling the patterns down to fit.
Sphax reported the issue via the Partner program, but Mojang don't seem to be fixing these sorts of issues currently...

Well to be fair 1.16 has created a plethora of new issues.
It's been out of 3 weeks and they still haven't updated their own Texture packs, and PureBdcraft is the only 3rd party TP I have that was approved for an update.
