Not sure if this is the right place to post this question since it's my first post on these forums,

Hey guys!

Essentially I'm just to play vanilla 1.4.7 (Teaching my friend to play MC first the first time using an older version) with Sphax 128x but there's weird artifacts on various blocks that I'm assuming OptiFine would fix? I'm having trouble getting OptiFine to work for an older (1.4.7) version of MC. Now that there's a new launcher it's replaced the location of minecraft.jar with the versions folder and I've tried editing the 1.4.7 folder according to the Installion for 'Minecraft 1.6.2 and newer' but to no avail.

I'm certain that this is an extremely common problem with a simple solution I'm not seeing. I haven't played Minecraft for a little while and everything has changed quite significantly but from my recollection OptiFine is needed in order to use texturepacks >16x without isssues. I've also posted to their forums as well but I'm uncertain as to whether the issue is with Sphax or OptiFine.

In any case any help would be greatly appreciated! I've included a screenshot but I'm assuming anyone reading this knows what I mean already :P

You're correct, you need an HD Patcher to fix those issues for old versions of Minecraft (newer versions you can just run the OptiFine.jar and it installs for you).

There are a few YouTube videos that tell you how to do this (which I had to check myself to refresh my memory for such an old version).

To install OptiFine in to old versions of Minecraft you have to copy its content in to minecraft.jar and delete the META-INF from the minecraft.jar.

I will, however, point out that there are no official downloads for versions of OptiFine before MC1.7.2 and you can run the risk of installing malware if you download them from elsewhere...

I would also be curious as to what you mean by "posted to their forums". OptiFine doesn't have a forum, only a Discord

Oh I meant their discord, yeah. :D Considering also posting to the reddit page.

So basically I think I've already tried what you've outlined in regards to optifine installation, they have a post on minecraft.net (https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/m ... ne-history) which links to older versions of the mod, I downloaded the latest Ultra version for MC1.4.6 (There's no 1.4.7 version but these, I'm told, are compatible) and using the guide here, renamed the 1.4.7 folder to 1.4.7_OptiFine, renamed both .json and the .jar to 1.4.7_OptiFine, edited the .json so that the "id": "1.4.7" reads "id": "1.4.7_OptiFine" and then finally copied the contents of the downloaded OptiFine rar into the now named 1.4.7_OptiFine.jar (Not sure there exists a minecraft.jar anymore as the versions now are named as such?) but only after deleting the META-INF folder from the .jar.

Minecraft launches just fine (I'm making certain to change the release to 1.4.7_OptiFine) but it acts as though no change has occured, the HD font doesn't load and the artifact issues persist as well as there being no additional settings which I know OptiFine has from using it in the past.

Any ideas where to go from here? I've also tried using an (admittedly outdated) version of MCPatcher (which likely worked in 2013) in order to patch the 1.4.7 folder (making sure to use it on a clean, unadulterated and non-OptiFine-d version, I've got the original 1.4.7 folder backed up), following that I attempted to use the newest version of MCPatcher to no avail as it doesn't seem to be able to find the 1.4.7.jar file as it's now in versions and not just a minecraft.jar like it used to be.

This might be a fools errand at this point XD

I can't really help you. I'd have to mess around trying it myself, and I don't have that time currently.

I suggest you hop on to their Discord. I'm sure someone will remember how to do it: https://discord.gg/OptiFine

So I'm not sure if you finally fixed this, but now I got some time to try I remembered the super simple stupid way to get this done.

  1. Get MultiMC & run it
  2. Click "Add Instance" at the top, give it a name, and find Version 1.4.7 in the list > Click OK.
  3. Select the new instance and on the right click "Edit Instance"
  4. In the window that appears click "Version" and in that window click "Add to Minecraft.jar"
  5. Locate the OptiFine zip and click OK > It'll appear in the list below MC
  6. Click "Launch" at the bottom
  7. You're now using OptiFine!

Beyond that you can just copy the mods/configs over to the instance.
