Any useful tips for making sphax texture packs patches?

Hey there, I am interested in creating some sphax texture packs for my own personal use. I have started playing the new mod pack called "hexxit" from the technic pack of which is pretty awesome also I noticed there arent any patches for most of the mods out there yet(if they are I apologize). even at that, I would like to learn how to sphaxify textures. I know, I probably should be reading the terms of use for sphax textures and after this I will most likely do so. whatever i create would not be posted anywhere on the web.

My question is when making a texture pack / Mod Patch how does a person go about getting the actual texture to work with as a base for the new one(sphax)? what I mean is, without any texture packs the modders actually have a default look for each block(or atleast I think they do). Do you actually have to open the file up in photoshop and edit it from there or do you guys just start from the bottom and work your way up by mirroring the actual texture for whichever block you are working on? Thanks for any tips on actually getting started on the sphax textures. I just really enjoy using this texture pack it is by a long shot THE best texture pack that I have ever used! it sets the standard for what minecraft should look like!

And also, I apologize if this is one of those questions that gets asked alot. I had found a couple threads that are pretty helpful but they dont really help anyone get there feet wet in sphaxifying!

The best is to use Photoshop or Gimp and starting with a texture from PureBDcraft in 512x. Then, follow the tips&tricks and maybe use the resources from the BDcraft community

thanks, I just downloaded gimp the other day, still working with the feel of it.

How do you actually get the texture from the modpack? some of the modpacks I have no idea what an item should look like. which files do I need to extract in order to get these images for the default/basic texture of them!

Personally I find Inkscape to be the best (free) option for this kind of work. I used to use GIMP, and it is good for what it does, but I found that some things can be stressful, and its support for drawing polygons is pretty lacking. I've never really used Photoshop or Illustrator because I'm a Linux guy but I think Illustrator is a vector editor like Inkscape, so might work well too. Inkscape can be a bit weird to get used to at first (probably due to being a vector editor) but once you do it's really powerful. And, being vector-native it saves to svgs and I've managed to write a shell script to export my svg folder structure to the one folder for each common png size. I'm sure the same should be possible in batch scripts.

And if you look in the mod zips (in ~/.technic/hexxit/mods or %APPDATA%\.technic\hexxit\mods) the textures should be in the mods folder in each zip

Cool, very helpful! Im holding my own in photoshop for now! I am thinking about redownloading Illustrator as everywhere I look everyone says it makes a huge difference but is not required to make sweet textures!

---------------------------------------------------

I have a question bc I am playing around with a mod and trying to create my own textures for it. The mod in particular that I am working with is Hexxit Gear.

While I am slowly teaching myself how to create texture packs in general and for mods There are a bunch of small things I dont know how to do yet such as the file paths..

on alot of the mods i have looked at and studied i notice that the path goes something like this:

(MOD NAME) ---> Mods or textures ---> (Mod Name) ----> (Textures) & sometimes just right in the root folder or even it would have its own path kinda like Twighlightforest does.

But with hexxit gear the path is this (HexxitGear-1.0-23) ---> Textures ---> Armor, Blocks, Items, Maps.

Would this go into the main Textures folder of the tp, and be in the same folder as all the other default textures in the(Textures) folder, or would it go in the Mods folder(if true what would be the name of the folder for hexxit?) or its own special folder?

I would normally just Play around with it and put it in the Main Textures folder of the texture pack and just go trial and error from there but I have done that before and it messed everything up and caused the tp to not even load. I am taking a break from creating them for a bit and thought id ask and possibly search around.

I apoloize if I am being complicated with my question, or even if its a noob question! sometimes I tend to be a little bit OCD about trying to explain my questions!

Thanks! :)

It would go in textures -> armor, etc.

People who put anything in the main Minecraft folders are dumb though.

Ok, sorry! I know that was probably one of those questions where its sorta obvious that is where it goes. I now see that its sorta obvious that is where they should go.. Still learning

I noticed that a few of them actually create the mods with the textures in the main root. This is frowned upon in the texture world I assume?

I agree though, that the root of the texture pack should not contain any mod textures!

Thanks Han!
