The shadows coming from the elements are wrong. They're too dark and in the wrong direction (look at any normal PureBD GUI).

Also, Sphax never indents arrows, etc. on GUIs, but I guess this just depends on the style you're attempting to achieve on machines.

Last I recall watching Sparkst3r's videos I'm sure he said he was doing them wrong :P

Also, from what I use for GUIs (and have compared closely to Sphax's stuff):
  • Drop Shadows from light elements are: #614B2B, 40% opacity, 106 Angle, 4 length (maybe 5 length)
  • Elements like arrows that go on the wood backgrounds, etc. are: #614B2B, 50% opacity
  • Elements like arrows as above, but when active for progress are: #322817, 85% opacity
[these are close approximations, obviously I can't know without seeing Sphax's PSDs, but they match pretty closely]

What are those gears used for? If they're items and oreDict compatible they're going to be all flashy in NEI when compared with the ones from BuildCraft/ThermalExpansion where they're using CadenDonut's "3D" style.

They're just basic flat gear shapes I've used for detail on a few blocks. I wouldn't recommend using them as items.

@GrumpyPirate Beautiful green nuclei =)

They would make nice accents as gems.

Photoshop action for making very basic, ever-so-slightly-3D versions of items. Distorts the selected layer into a slightly-3D perspective, adds a 6px stroke and a simple drop shadow.

Image

Instructions for use:
  • Rasterise any text layers
  • Select the layer/group desired (no merging needed!)
  • Run the action - bam, slightly-3D items.
It's not perfect nor amazing, but should do well as a quick fix for most 'thin' items - and you can of course edit the styles afterwards. I made this action simply to unify (and speed up) the 3D effect across a ton of items I was making at the time.
Happy new year :)
