Optifine addon produces openGL error 1281

As soon as I add this addon to my game it says OpenGL error 1281 (incorrect value) in the chat. Apparently disabling region rendering fixes it but I rather have it one since I play on a high render distance.

Is there a different fix?

Usually these issues can be fixed by doing the following:
Go to Options > Video Settings > Use VBOs > OFF
